Game Recap

The Mets beat the Phillies in a thriller last night led by Johan Santana, 1-0.

Starting

I am going to say one thing, when it comes to starting pitching there is Johan Santana, then there is everyone else. He is in a league of his own, he really is. He dominated the Phillies for seven innings last night and did not allow a run, and if the season ended today I would have Johan Santana as my MVP. The Phillies hitters were simply baffled with each pitch he threw, fastball, change-up, he could have lobbed it over the plate and they would not have hit it. He finished with exactly 100 pitches, but could have gone the distance. His line was: 7 IP, 0 ER,  2 hits. 2 BB, 10 Ks.

Bullpen

It was a simple job, made less simple with the unavailability of JJ Putz, but they got it done. Jerry went to Pedro Feliciano in the eighth and he allowed a double, but then got three big outs, capped off by striking out Ryan Howard to end the inning. Then in the ninth the Mets went to the Brad Lidge of 2009, Frankie Rodriguez who slammed the door in the Phillies faces, and hopefully broke a few noses.

Offense

If they lost this game they would have had hell to pay. They only got two hits and only nine total base runners, and only scored one of them, so Johan and his briliance saved us from that. The two hits were from Fernando Tatis and Daniel Murphy. The big story was the Phillies D, or lack of it making three errors, and one that was not counted but cost them the game, where Jason Werth held the ball too long to allow the slowest Met maybe Carlos Delgado to score on a Pedro Feliz throwing error.

The Mets have placed Ollie on the DL and are going to call up Jon Niese to pitch Friday, so Ken Takahashi will be available in the pen tonight...

I really think it's best for Ollie to go on the DL. I was big on him getting his head straight in the minors, but this is just as important if his knee is bust. I also think Niese was unlucky to get sent down originally, so it will be nice to have him back. Johan has the lowest run support in the majors at 2.12 so it's only a matter of time before they get behind him. He's a beast! Go Mets!
